The spiky Emo hairstyle is a trend that keeps resurfacing year after year. Whether you are a female or male, this hairstyle looks funky and fresh on long or short hair. Adding spikes all over your head, or just to the front or back, is a style statement easily done with the help of sticky beauty products. While anyone can use such products, the trick to keeping the hair straight out is to apply them properly. Knowing the right way to spike your hair will keep it securely in place from morning until night.

Wash and dry your hair, using volumizing products. This will help give the roots lift when you spike your hair. Blot and squeeze your hair dry with a towel.

2

Squeeze a golf-ball size amount of styling mousse into your palm, and rub your hands together. Massage the mousse into your hair and roots. This will help give your hair an additional lift when drying.

3

Set a hairdryer to hot. Hold the hairdryer 4 to 6 inches from your hair, and dry it. Use your fingers to pull hair away from the root and upward, as you dry. If you are spiking only the back or top of your head, and do not want lift anywhere else, then only pull the hair upward in the areas you want to spike.

4

Style any hair that is not spiked however you like. Depending on the Emo style you want to create, you may slick down the front or back portion of your hair.

5

Apply a quarter-size amount of pomade or spiking gel to your fingertips. The pomade or gel should be sticky -- not slick or wax-like. Pull sections of the hair you want to spike outward, and apply the pomade or gel. If you have a large section of hair you want to spike, then apply the pomade or gel to your hands and pull sections of hair upward. There is no wrong way to pull the hair outward.

6

Wash your hands to remove the pomade or gel. Turn the hairdryer to low speed with medium to high heat. Hold the hairdryer with your non-dominant hand, and use your other hand to pull the spiked hair outward. Hold the hairdryer under the hair, so it does not flatten the spikes, and pull the spiked hair outward. This will help dry the pomade or gel onto the hair -- creating a lasting spike.

7

Spray your hair with medium-hold hairspray. Turn the hairdryer onto low speed with high heat, and heat the hair slightly to secure the hairspray.

Tips & Warnings

Carry a small travel-size hairspray with you, to touch up any areas that may fall throughout the day.

Shorter hair will spike easier than longer hair.

Use less hairspray for longer hair, because it may weigh down the hair.
